Trumpeter Monica Benson is the rare freelance musician with enviable facility and proven success across wide-ranging musical styles. Her enthusiasm and experience ranges from classical to contemporary, from rock and indie to pop music, and the occasional musical. Known for her professional work in the Chicago area, Monica has performed with multiple ensembles and bands including the all-female 60s pop cover band The Bangers, the Illinois Brass Band, indie band The Generationals, and rock band The Ides of March.
A vehicle for brass pedagogy, Monica is a program instructor at Sistema Ravinia where she teaches trumpet, french horn, trombone, and euphonium, and maintains a private studio of young musicians in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. A graduate of DePaul University, Monica also plays a mean bugle, and can be found regularly calling horses and jockeys to the post at Arlington International Racecourse.
In addition to her music career, she enjoys competing in triathlons, reading, drinking coffee and tea, and is an avid explorer of the outdoors, being a certified scuba diver and having hiked all the way across the Grand Canyon.
